Here’s an awesome video about industrial design in the late 50s put together by GM. Featured towards the end (19:00) is the design process put into the 1958/1959 Impala.

IF, on the other hand, you’re interested in how nebulous the GM marketing team’s understanding of design was in ‘56...

Elipse guides, french curves, pastels ..... felt like I was back in school. So happy we have photoshop now. Also I’m going to start calling myself an “American stylist”.

I do enjoy doing things by hand sometimes, keep the drafting skills sharp. It is crazy to think that everything was designed and sketched by hand back then and now cars are designed by CAD monkeys.

IIRC the first and ONLY completely computer designed car (by GM at least) was the SSR. People still sketch and render:
.... But you’re not wrong, I haven't sketched in a while. Gotta get back on that.

That was great! This is from my favorite period of design (45-65). Of course the 59 Chevy is a beautiful machine as well.

I do a major design and build project every summer for shits and gigs. This year was a guitar built and designed from scratch. I think next summer it will be a chair or possibly a coffee table in some sort of mid-century modern throwback design.

Sounds awesome. I love learning about design but not as much as my engineering.

Yeah, I’m studying engineering but a little creativity is always a plus to have when problem solving.

Who knows maybe as an engineer I will have to work with designers. Depends on where I end up after school.
